Default could you help me with a wierd Problem?

Hello all:
I was frantically searching the net for some help to a problem I have been having with my PSI washer. I hate my first post being one asking for help but I am stymied by this one.
If you have any ides please pass them along.
Steven
PS..
(Please Don't laugh at my itty bitty PSI washer

Troy Bilt
Model 020242
3000 psi 3.8gpm
7hp BS engine

PUMP (here are some numbers off the sticker)
Maker ??
PPAP9047
D.L. 4203062
1262/7236

Basically....

I put it up last season and it worked fine. Stored in a garage not subjected to freezing.

Hook up water and establish flow.
Crank engine. Have to run at 1/4 to 1/2 choke to get it to run.
When I pull the trigger on the gun it kills the engine.

I pulled the pump off the shaft and the engine starts and runs fine. Will run off choke and I can advance the throttle manually with no problem.

I pulled the brass pressure head off the pump. All the valves (3) were fine and worked freely. There was no corrosion or buildup other than a slight film of hard water film.

The three cylinders (arranged in a triangular formation) had no scoring or corrsion. The wipers/o rings were in good shape.

The oil in the pump was clean and uncontaminated by water or chemicals.

I put the pump back on the engine shaft without the pressure head. I pulled the engine through a couple of rotations (not started) and everything seemed to work smooth with no binding. I replaced the pressure head and buttoned everything up.

I put water back through it and got flow. I cranked the engine and I am back at the beginning of this tale. It has to be choked and if I pull the trigger I either immediately kill the engine or get very low PSI.

I have exhausted my knowledge of the problem. I am hoping someone here can shed some more light. In reading through the other posts I can see where it is often somethign with the unloader valve. Do you think this is where it might be?

I have attached a picture of the pump to hopefully help in diagnosis.

Steven

Did you check and see if anything was in the spray tip on the wand?

Larry:

Thanks for the thought.

Sorry should have mentioned that. With the engine off and the water on (no tip installed) there is water flowing through the wand if I squeeze the trigger. I will dig around some more and hopefully I can stumble across the issue..

Yes it does sound like unloader problem, may have to take it apart to find your problem.Did you try loseing the nut that tightens the spring on top of the unloader, maybe even tap it with a hammer.

Is that the original engine seems a little small to be pushing 3.8 gpm at 3000 psi. You may need an 11hp

i am going to assume you mean 2.8 gpm and suggest that you take the air filter assembly apart crank the engine and start spraying carb cleaner into the carb. if you need to get the rpms up use a little starting spray. Let it run a good 15 mins after that. See if it improves. May have built up some plaque from sitting too long.

Thaks for continuing to help guys...

Yes I should have typed 2.8gpm.. Loose fingers on the keyboard I guess.

I have not touched the unloader valve. Until you mentioned the spring and nut I wasn't even sure that was it.

I will give both of those a try tomorrow and hopefully that will solve the problem.

Thanks again, Steven

Your gas got stale and varnished the carburetor, probably blocking the main jet.
