Default All american pressure washer

Hi guys, im trying to install an adjustable thermostat on my all american pressure washer but its proving to be a problem, i removed my non-adjustable and a connected my #1 and #2 terminal to it and i grounded the p1 terminal from my GPT3090 but as soon as i started working, it nearly fried all the wiring. so i shutted the burner off and everything went back to normal. im pretty good with 12 volts but i dont understand how their wiring goes or how the terminals on the thermostat shuold be wired.

The 3 terminals on the thermostat are: common, normally open, and normally closed. You should have only used 2 of the terminals, common and normally closed. By hooking the third terminal to ground, you shorted the 12 volt electrical system.
