Smile Stainless Steel Tools

Do any of you have a source for stainless steel tools like plairs, wrenches, screw drivers, etc? The only thing I have found is ss needle nose plairs at a large sporting goods store used for fishing.

Harold,

You might look at some medical equipment pages. Perhaps you could get lucky and find special equipment such as that. I recieve medical design news in the mail from time to time, perhaps they have a web page too.

Better yet, look for the "Snap On" tool webpage. You can also stop one of the drivers and ask them. I am sure they would look into finding what you want. Also, there are other traveling tool companies. They would be your best bet.

Good Luck,

To fight corrosion, I keep tools in a plastic tool box, not a metal one. In the box I keep a couple small shop towels that I sprayed down with WD40. One on the bottom of the box, and one layed on the top of the tools. Works for me.

Default VOC Strip

Either get your self some Silica Gel pouches or a VCI strip. The strips emit a vapor that covers your tools, protecting them from rust. They need to be replaced every 6 months.

I like the Bullfrog myself.

I had just remembered about some stuff we use in the machine tool industry to help prevent rust. The strips previously mentioned joged my memory-- What we used was camfer or campher (sp). You should be able to pick it up at any drug store--just ask for it. It comes in a small square package, and looks like silicone. Just open a package and leave it in the tool box. The stuff is quite cheap, but smells kind of bad. If you use it, be sure to wash your hands emediatly after...It is not good for ingestion.

Thanks all for the responses. I'll check them out. I checked Snap On Tools and they don't have SS tools. Struck out at marine stores except for needle nose plairs. I'll get some camphor to put in the tool box though I don't have a bad problem there. The problem is on the plairs I secure to the power washer with a bunge cord. Still looking for SS plairs, someone has to make them. Thanks again for the responses.

Harold,

You could try a pair of Robo-Grip adjustable pliars. They come from Sears, and they are coated with a black finish, and seem to resist rust really well.

I like the idea of attaching to the p/w for quick and easy access. I am going to do that.

Thanks for the idea!

you might have a hard time, stainless steel is weak and not very good for tool making and yes if its not a medical grade it will still rust. For tools they need too high a carbon in the steel for it not to rust. Stainless is brittle-on my harley you can use stainless as fasteners to ''say hold a fender on but could never use it to hold the motor to the frame.''

The more you learn the more you earn! Thanks to everyone for their help.

Harold,

I recently saw a stainless steel screwdriver set in a Craftsman catalog. I'm not sure whether they carry anything else in stainless. You may end up piecing a set together from a variety of sources. Good Luck!

Well today I found one of the folding type pliers that had a true pliers jaw instead of the needle nose style you usually see. I bought it. It was made by Sheffield, so I'm going to look them up on the internet to see if they have regular pliers. Thanks for all the suggestions. I got some camphor but haven't tried it out.
