Question Burner Not Working

I'm fairly new to the power wash field and want to learn how to trouble shoot my own equipment AND fix it, if possilbe. I have a pressure washer unit from out of Dallas with a 16hp Vanguard.

A couple days ago the burner stopped igniting; it just emits lazy, faint clouds of diesel fuel.

Any suggestions?

Sounds like a blown transformer,a low charged battery could have done it.

Check the wire going to the wing nut on the battery. They vibrate loose sometimes if this is from who I think it is.

Default Possible burner solutions

Try charging the battery first. Its the easy cheap fix.
You may need to but a small trickle charger to keep the battery in top shape in the future.

If that fails, check your transformer. Hook it up to 12 volts and run a srewdriver sideways across the springs -- does it spark? yes = fine no= replace.

Been running the same machine for 14 years never replaced a transformer yet!

Although, it is time for a new one.

*****************CAUTION*************
The smoke is evident you are tossing large amounts of raw unignited diesel in your burner tube. This equals WOOOMF(say this at the top of your lungs) if it lights with heavy amounts of smoke.

Be careful after charging the battery and trying to ignite the burner. All that raw diesel will ignite at once and flames will discharge. (keep body parts clear).

Let it run if this happens until it burns clear. As long as the flames are contained in the tube.
Keep a fire extinguisher handy!

and run a srewdriver sideways across the springs -

When doing this test make sure and not touch any metal of the screwdriver with your hands. The screwdriver should be long enough to reach from spring to spring,it should be layed on top of one spring and slowly moved into the other spring. If the transformer is still good it will fire before the screwdriver touches the other spring. If its good the spark will be strong and if its bad you will get a weak spark or none at all.
If its good and still not firing the burner you could have electro rod problems, they could be out of ajustment.

Sounds like you have some sound troubleshooting
advice given already.

If your transformer / ignitor has at least 12 volts
going in to it, but you can not see a bright blue
spark jump between the scredriver and the spring
{isee above psot by Larry[/i] you need a new
ignitor / transformer, we can ship you one today.

Here is some general troubleshooting information that
may be useful to you or others,

Compliments of: Hydro Tek.

Hydro Tek Pressure Washer Troubleshooting Guide

Power System: Gas or Diesel | Electric Motor

Heating System: Diesel Fired | Natural Gas / Liquid Propane

Pumping System

Probable causes are listed with most likely cause first.

Repairs should be made by qualified technicians only.

Power System: Gasoline or Diesel Driven

Problem

Probable Cause

Remedy

Engine will not start or crank over.

Battery dead.

Charge or replace battery, add electrolyte if battery is new

Dirty Battery Contacts

Clean connections

Battery cables disconnected

Connect or replace damaged cables.

Engine, pump, or gearbox is seized.

Replace or repair seized part.

Key switch, solenoid or starter on engine defective.

Repair or replace faulty component.

Engine will not start but will crank over

Engine power switch is off or defective.

Check engine power switch.

Low oil shut down is activated.

Add oil to engine, check more frequently.

Low on fuel.

Fill with the appropriate fuel, bleed injector pump on diesel engines. Bleed injector pump on diesel engines

Fuel filter is clogged.

Replace or clean fuel filter, bleed injector pump on diesel engines.

Engine flooded or starved.

Choke only as required (not applicable to diesels).

Engine bogs down under load, whenever spray gun is triggered.

Engine needs to be repaired or replaced.

See engine manual or engine dealer.

Operating in high elevation.

Lower the pressure on the unit and check for correct engine speed (RPM).

Carbon deposits on cylinder head.

Remove head and clean off deposits.

Power System: Electric Driven | Top

Problem

Probable Cause

Remedy

Electric motor does not start.

No electric power.

Check cord, plug, socket, and breaker.

Thermal overload in the motor/or starter has been tripped.

Reset manual overload by depressing the thermal switch on the outside of the motor or starter after the motor has cooled. CAUTION! Automatic overload will restart the motor automatically when it has cooled.

Power switch inoperative.

Check power switch.

Electric motor or wiring failure.

Replace or repair motor and/or wiring.

No water pressure at inlet

Connect to appropriate water supply

Machine will not auto-start (if equipped)

Must have adequate water supply

25 psi minimum

Coil scale build up

Descale coil for better water flow.

Check filter screen and inlet pressure

Remove spray nozzle and pull trigger gun to check auto-start function.

Inlet flow switch defective or jammed with debris

Check mechanical function and electrical signal to relay by testing for continuity on #2 and #4 of the time delay. If no continuity with the trigger pulled replace inlet flow switch. If continuity is present, remove wires from #1 and #5 of the time delay relay and make connection between the two wires and test the machine. If the machine works replace the time delay relay. If machine does not work check and replace the contactor or motor starter.

Default Appreciative!

Thanks or all the input, suggestions and ***CAUTION***.

I've opened up the transformer and done the srewdriver check for an arc and found NONE. I have an appointment to take it into Geyser in Riverside to have it replaced.

I'd want to get to know my machine better and even do some of the fixin myself: HydroTech or another Co., can you give me a quote on a transformer to match up against what I'm being charged tomorrow? Beckett 12V

Thanks again!
