As a matter of fact,My 6th year anniversary comes up on sept.20 I did my first deck on this date in 1995 but I did research for at least a year before this and started advertising probably in august 1995 .I actually did not go full time until may 1996,but I can tell you I will never work for anyone else for as long as I live!!!!
With the experience I have gained I could start a business in any field I feel comfortable in and probably be successful.

Been it the business for 7 years 5 years full time. When people start out on a business adventure, I feel they should do it part-time first. Make some mistakes and see if you can handle the pressure of running a business. I live in Wisconsin I have seven months of making enough money to carry me the whole year. It was rough the first couple of years when i went full time. With a wonderfull wife and children (God Bless Them) we have seen an increase in business every year. My secret is the only competion is myself I determine if I will succeed or fail.

Charlie,

Right on Man.......I liked your last sentence: "The only competition is myself. I determine if I will succeed or fail"

Never better spoken.

Jumped in full-time head first and have not looked back since!
But I did spend many months studying, talking and learning about things.
I had worked with wood quite a bit, so was o.k. with the do's and dont's of decks and fences.
Grabbed my first washer and learned how to clean vinyl at home.
And pretty much have picked up roofs, driveways, etc. along the way...no regrets yet!

(actually there is one...I sold my first truck a couple of moths ago, and really miss it due to sentimental reasons)

Must say that this board has been a major contributor to learning new and better things with all the varied opinions and preferred methods we each have/use.

So thanks to everyone for sharing!

I'm sure we all owe at least an ounce of our successes to everyone else on-line here.
