Bid a deck to strip & seal with 3 coats of CWF-UV prior to my services(and my knowledge). Decks are new business to me, and I didn't realize she'd put that many layers on over the years. This was a mother's day gift from her children, and they contracted me out!! Well, after I get the deck striped (took forever to strip that stuff) and dry, find out it needed to be sanded, and of course that's extra! But then come to find out she wanted it re-sealed with CWF-UV!! This stuff is a pain.

Should I offer anything of a warranty? I was thinking maybe through the end of summer, no more!! I had bid the job using Olympic Maximum, so of course the materials were cheaper, but I still had to go back to sand (3½ hours) and apply this crap by hand (7 additional hours to my estimated 3½ apply time)! As for my estimate, the bill will reflect my additional time.

Don'tcha just love these deals we get ourselves into??

It would be foolish to offer a warranty with that product.

Well, just out of the kindness of my heart, cuz her husband had past away, and had built this beautiful deck, I did offer her a 6 month warranty, but no longer. Plus, I may get some extra work from her and her children! Who knows?

I am not so sure you want additional business from them, or at least i wouldnt.

It's impossible to warrenty a deck lasting anytime. I have seen sprinkler marks on decks and they ask why it looks so white? I tell them Hey if you want to boil water on your deck the finish is going to be gone in months or even weeks.

Next thing you know your customers are going to call you for dog marks and say the finish is bad.

To many things to warrenty a deck finish, you can only warrenty your workmanship, no sealer on the house and applied right.

Then tell them a year to two years depending on weather. The product liability takes the rest from your liability.

As time goes on you will learn what the fly by night deck refinishers use, and to allways try and get the info on what was put on the deck the last time. And Id'ing the finishes.

I just did a deck that was two years old, she called me before but as allways I was allready out three months for work. So this year she got me in Feb. The guy used the CWF it looked like it faded out but as soon as I hit with sodiumMetasilacte the tell tail wax showed it's ugly head. I ended up being okay it was a small job but I did get trapped non the less.

I hate these painters that don't no jack about deck refinishing.

I have a big retierment community in my area, a window washer started two years ago doing decks on the side, and screwed up so many deck with a water based sealer. He started getting his return work and found out what a crappy product he used. He does not do decks anymore. And I am now stuck with telling his customers and a few of mine that took his cheap o price that I will not work on them. To many easy jobs and customers why screw with a problem deck when you can get good work.
