Accept credit cards without a merchant account

Some time ago we wanted to setup a merchant account so we could accept credit card payments from our customers but found we didn't process enough to really payoff by the time you payed your fees (it costed us $30 a month)... forget that!!

We found an easier way using PayPal. Today almost everbody has the internet and this is the perfect solution to you accepting credit cards. If our customer wants to pay by credit card we just send a bill to their email address via Paypal...they in return pay the online invoice via Paypal and the money goes to your bank account directly. Fees are are usually 1.9% of the ammount + $.25. Check it out, it's worth it for small business such as ours.

Greg,

I have used PayPal when buying stuff off of E-bay....but, I have never considered using it for business purposes....... Offhand, sounds like a good idea, as long as the customer is willing to give their credit card # online....

Mike,

Technology is moving that way... eventually I believe there will be no choice in the matter. I would say in the last 4 years we have had no more than 10 credit card requests/transactions through our cleaning business. I wouldn't doubt it if we paid more out in software fees, monthly transaction fees, etc... than we actually billed for those invoices. With PayPal you only pay on the invoices you submit. Sure its a little out of the ordinary but it's cheap and Iif a customer wants to use a credit card to pay for services they are now able to (assuming they have internet access). I have been using Paypal for 1 season now and no credit credit sales haven't went up any but the balance in my account is about $30 higher each month

Greg,

Good idea. My company only pays a monthy charge of $7.50 for our merchant account. Nothing that really breaks the bank if we don't use it much.

Can't really say we really get much business because of it though. If it did cost us more I would probably not have it.

Two questions:
How do you handle chargebacks to your account?

Are you getting a hard copy embossment of the
card to prove it was presented for payment?
Without the hard copy you have little to stand
on when it comes to the cardholder's rights to
their issuing bank.
