Bleach

Hi. Does anyone know if regular bleach(6%) is sold by the drum/barrell? I need to find a better price on bleach if possible. I am going through bleach like crazy since I started using the x-jet nozzle. I currently pay $.97 per bottle of bleach at K-mart. Any tips on how to be more economical or efficient?
Thanks, Mark

Maybe you can see if K-Mart can give you a better price if you buy it in bulk. If not try buying it a Sam's Club or Costco. I bet you can get it a little cheaper that way. I have bought similar chemicals that way in the past and the store cut me a better deal if a I over a $100 worth. I know thats a lot of bleach but if you are going though it fast that could keep you ahead of your demand.

Why not use liquid pool chlorine? Without double checking, I can't remember the exact percentage of chlorine in bleach, but I know it is far more than 6%. You can probably still get cases of pool chlorine at Sams Club. Check the contents label, do the math, and likely use a 1/4 of the amount. And liquid chlorine is only about 2 bucks a gallon. I think it would be easier than dealing with drums.

Just a thought.

Mark,

We buy our 12% chlorine from a local pool supply company. It's available in 5, 15 and 55 gallon sizes. We prefer the 15 gal. size. You can dilute it to get the 6% mix your looking for.

Thanks for the replies. I would like to try pool chlorine, but I am concerned about the effects such as damage to landscaping, health, etc. Any advice on how to safely handle 12% or diluting to 6%?
Thanks,
Mark

Don't forget that bleach does have a shelf life. Dont rush out and buy a huge quantity if you will not use it fairly quickly.........that 6% dwindles down as time goes on........

I have been using Clorox Outdoor to clean houses. It is a little more conintrated ,so you don't need as much. It comes out to about the same price. I like it because it has corroision inhibitors in it.

i called literally every pool supply shop in the birmingham area and found only one that sells chlorine in liquid form--at $6.00/gal. are any of ya'll familiar with any place i can buy direct from a wholesaler on line or by phone (and without ruinous shipping charges)? i like the extra strength of the liquid chlorine, undiluted, for really tough stains.

thanks

Use your favorite search engine, and check out the internet pool stores.

Otherwise, check Sams, Costco, or Meijers. Maybe even SuperK.

$6.00 is way too much, but then, most pool stores charge an arm and a leg anyway. That's why I never buy stuff for my pool from those places.

Pool Chlorine

WoW. 6 bucks a gallon ? Here in Florida I get Chlorine at the pool store for .89 per gal. one store even gives me a discount to .79 per gal. I use it on roofs at 6 1/2 to 1 and it turns mildew to a rust color in about 5 minutes. That figures out to about 1.85 %. (12%/6.5=1.846). It does kill some leaves on plants that are flowered. It dosen't seem to hurt plants that have heavy leaves. Mike:cool:

Richard, In Birmingham, AL you can get 12% sodium hypochlorite (chlorine) at Industrial Chemicals Inc. I'm in Mobile, AL and I used to get 2 drums twice a month from their location in Mobile, but it comes from their B'ham headquarters. It was $1.16 / gal when I stopped buying from them. I now get it from a pool store in Pensacola, FL for $0.89 / gal. Mike Hughes is right about the shelf life, but I know it will hold its strength for a month if you keep the lids on it and keep it out of sunlight.

Mark, you want to use a strong enough solution of chlorine to kill the mildew, mold and fungus, but no stronger. I apply 1.44% of chlorine to the surface and make sure you have enough suds from your detergent to keep the chlorine in place (dwell time) or it just runs off. Wait 2 or three minutes and use a low pressure rinse. If surface is very bad, a second application may be needed before rinsing. I have no problem with plants and flowers at this percentage and with a good rinse.

thank you, harold, for the info on where to find liquid chlorine at a reasonable price. when you say 1.44% chlorine solution, that means 98.56 parts water to 1.44 parts chlorine, or a roughly 70 to 1 water to chlorine ratio--right? that seems like a pretty weak solution, am i missing something?

Richard, no you are not missing anything. My down stream injector picks up 12% and my chlorine is 12%, so 12% of 12% is 1.44%. There really isn't quite that much because I add 4 ounces of my detergent per gallon of chlorine.

actually harold, i must confess that i was missing something. i was treating the gallon of liquid chlorine as 100% of the chemical, not as 12%. i now understand. but, as you must have gathered from my reply to you in the other thread, i am confused about how you apply/ inject your chemicals. if you can clear that up, i'll be most greatful. i'm already too confused about too many d***ed things as it is.

Richard, I apply my chemicals by drawing the wash solution out of a 5 gal tank thru the chemical injector and into the main water stream. The chemical injector only draws the wash solution when you drop the psi of your main water stream by opening up the nozzle size. If that is not clear enough, ask a few specific questions and I'll try to address them.

Hi, no offense but bleach[never used more then 4 gal. on any house] 4 cup of DAWN and some truck wash will make 20 gal cost $14 on a house that used all of it you better be getting at least $150 i can live with that without storing clorine[but im working out of my house right now] In NJ you need a placard on your truck to pick up more then 10 gal. of clorine[buy the way what are the rules for carrying chems on your rig? besides MSDA sheets. God forbid your box truck caught fire and some fireman didnt know what he was dealing with.

Good points Ron. For a typical house, I will use about 5 gal of wash solution that costs about $5.25 for the chlorine and the detergent.

I do carry all MSDS sheets and I can carry one 55 gal drum at a time with proper labels.

When appling the clorine and detergent, using my machines downstream injectorI don't want to mess up my machine. If I
purchased another downstream injector and placed directly on my machine outlet(which is accually on my machines chemical injector)Will this be far enough from my pump to
keep from causing any damage, or will the mix still be getting in my pump?
Would appreciate your help.
