Engine trouble

I have an electric start hot water unit. I am having trouble with getting the engine started. The engine will only turn over when the trigger on the gun is squeezed while turning the key. Also, the unit backfires at times-any reasons why?
Thanks,

Check your unloader. It is not working right is my guess. By holding the gun open you are releasing pressure from the unloader.

Check the unloader first. Make sure all battery connections are clean and tight. Make sure the starter solenoid is functioning correctly. They tend to melt down sometime causing hard starting.

Backfiring can be caused by four main things: shuting the engine off at more than idle speed. Good idea to let engine idle for 15 seconds before stopping. Anti-run or after-fire solenoid on carburator not functioning: not all engines have these. Idle mixture ajusted to rich. Idle adjusted to high.

Hope this helps.

From my experience the engine has a load on it if you don't pull the trigger when starting the pressure washer. Think about it, what function does the unloader do? When the pressure in the hose gets above the set limit of the unloader it diverts the water out the bypass. When you try to start the engine the pressure keeps building inside of the unloader until it gets to that high limit. What this means is you have a load on the engine until you release it by pulling the trigger. Once the motor starts the process is reversed. You would not believe how many starters I replace because of this. The first thing to check is the fuel filter and the air filter then the oil. The oil float shuts the engine down when the oil is low.
