I have a homeowner with a log house sealed with sikkens cetol 1,with mildew on it. my question is can I wash it with a bleach wash without damaging finish or do I need to strip it. He wants to seal again after the wash. He sealed with sikkens cetol 1 when new, now sikkens has informed him cetol 1 does'nt have enough UV protection for the part of country we are in. They have recommended cetol 23. any advice would be great i need to get back with him on this. thanks

hi Greg,

.....according to Sikkens........

The Cetol system should be done by applying cetol 1, wait 24hrs, apply another coat of cetol 1, wait 24 hrs, and apply a topcoat of cetol 23. I believe it is also acceptable to wait 6 months before applying the #23.

Is the mildew on the outside of the logs or underneath the finish?? If it is underneath, you'll have to strip the finish to do it properly. If it is on the outside, they recommend cleaning the logs with 4oz. tsp, 1 qt. of bleach, and 3 qts of water (mixed)

I would call the company and tell them that #1 was applied 'X' years ago, and find out if you need to apply another coat of it before applying #23.

Sikkens says you should clean the house (like stated earlier) every 2-3 yrs and apply a light coat of #23 on the south and west sides of the house. 3-4 yrs on the other sides, again cleaning and applying a light coat of #23.

Hope this helps, all of it is straight out of Sikkens' literature.

good luck and let us know how it goes,

Hey Fellas

I was wondering if that new fangled corn cob blasting set up wouldent kick the stain off them logs. Looks good on paper and there is a guy who rents them at 400 a day.
No Muss noFuss, environmental-like..............

corn cob

i have heard that corn cob blasting is real tuff on the wood. Takes away from the natural look.

COB BLASTERS

Pros:

environmental
no water entering house
you can stain the same day
Removes finish first time

Cons:

Scuffs wood badly
expensive
gets dust in house
gotta clean up the grit

Most of the guys i talk to that do lots of log homes only use this method in certain situations (heavily multi-layered finish). It is hardly ever necessary. Mr. Bilyeu has said there are lawsuits pending because some plaintiffs have said that it took away the natural appearance of their logs. It is probably something you should look in to pretty seriously before making a decision on doing it. Good luck, i hope all you guys have a good week!!

Ok I promise I won't push Woodguard anymore (but it really is tops, eliminates mold problems too) lol. I never use bleach on wood. I use tsp and water. I would try and find the source of the mold and take the proper steps to stop it from ever being a problem. Down sprout extensions that carry water further away from the house will help, small landscape stones placed around the area of the house will better define the mold and then you can spray the stones with bleach which will stop the wick affect of it reaching the house. Trimming trees so that they are not too close to the roof or even touching it, will help out a great deal. Good luck

Sikkens......

First, is the mildew on top of the log or under the finish???? This will tell you if the Cetol 1 must be removed. How long ago was the Cetol 1 Applied? Was an insecticide added to the Cetol 1? Sikkens recommends NO Additives... Additives will void Their warranty... When was the home built? What is the moisture content of the Logs now? Was the home PROPERLY Cleaned and Sanded/Buffed before the Cetol 1 was applied?? Was a borate application applied to the logs prior to the Cetol 1 being applied? What does the Log Home Manufacturer recommend for Sikkens application? Some Companies recommend 2 coats of Cetol 1 and only 1 coat of 23Plus..... Most, vice-versa...

Before you wash/strip/blast...... and MORE importantly... before another coat of ANYTHING is added to the logs.... these are the questions that need answered....

Cob Blasting...... We can sell ya some Blasters cheap.....not worth the effort...

Find out where the mildew is and write back...... Don F.

WOW.... now that I've read the other posts... geez, the original post was 11 days ago. I need to check out these bbs's more often... Good info up there Jon F.
