Hey guys I'm going to be cleaning roofs (until I fall through or off one) and I went to the owens corning website and they said to clean algae off roofs you need a cup of TSP, chlorine bleach, and water. I know where to get the bleach and water from but not the TSP. By the way Dan you aint as ugly as I thought!

Hi Kevin!!
You can find TSP at any Home Depot, Lowe's or hardware store! Be careful on those roofs!
Let us know how you do; may have to get Dennis up on one!

KEVIN YOU MIGHT WANT TO TRY A PRODUCT CALLED M-1 MADE BY JOMAPS IT IS SODIUM HYDROXIDE BASED AND WORKS MUCH BETTER THAN THE SOLUTION YOU DESCRIBED YOU CAN PURCHASE SOIUM HYDROXIDE BY THE BARELL FOR AROUND $50.00 AND CAN DILUTE IT TO BETWEEN 12-20% WITH A TOUCH OF NON BUTYL BASED DETERGENT 1 DRUM SHOULD MAKE APPROX 300-400 GALLONS TEST IT ON YOUR OWN ROOF OR A RELATIVES IT WORKS AS WELL AS PURE CLORINATING SOLUTION BUT DOES NOT PROVIDE THE ALGICIDE EFFECT THAT CLORINE DOES FROM PREVENTING REGROWTH PREMATURLY .IF YOU ARE CONCEREND ABOT SLIPPING BUY A PAIR OF ROK CLIMBING SHOES THE STICKY RUBBER WILL KEEP YOUR FEET FIRMLY PLANTED. GOOD LUCK BIRD

I'm just going to be cleaning asphalt shingle roofs to start because many people in my area have them and no one cleans them. There are a few metal roofs here but they dont seem to be mildewed. I dont want to try the wood shingled roofs anytime soon! That rock-climbing shoe idea is good as I was worried about slipping!

Kevin,

Just a word about roofs and TSP, be very careful as the solution you are talking about should do the trick but beware it will make the roof extreamly slick. Also make sure you pre-soak around plants before application and also with the use of TSP you will have to rinse, rinse, rinse and rinse including the house all the TSP back off. If it is left on it will streak the house. Dont let it dry on window either. Keep in mind Corning gave you the solution but did not give you directions.
As for mixing sodium hydroxide, dont even get me started. The mixing instructions are 18 pages long and if done incorrectly can cause serious problems even death.

I saw TSP at Wal-mart tonite; it was in a too-small bottle at too-high price. The M-1 at Lowe's is much more economical and has good instructions on the jug label. Good luck!
