I did a bunch of research and found what looks like may be the bast bang for the buck, just to get started out. I'm looking at the Briggs & Strattion Model 1808. I'd love to get everyone's thoughts on this brand and even this model, should anyone know it specifically. Here's a link to it:

Again, this is just to get me on my feet.. As the business grows, so will the washer!

Thanks for your input..

No No No

Check with Mark which advertise's on this board. For a couple Hundred more he can provide a much better longer lasting unit. Even though he sells honda engines...they are way better than B&S. Even if you are starting out looking to save some monies, I would not buy a B&S.

Briggs engine

Kevin, Keep looking. IMHO Honda makes the best single cylinder engines. The B&S Vangard is an excellent engine but it is dual cylinder. The Intek B&S which comes on the unit you are looking at is not as good an engine as the Honda. Honda's will run forever, very durable and vertually trouble free.

Michael,
IMHO you are so very right. I have a B&S 9 hp motor that I have not used in several years. Too MANY problems.

Kevin, get yourself a HONDA, more money up front but less in the long run.

Honda

Kevin, Just an added note . In picking a Honda make sure it is the GX series (Red ones) . They're the best.

Thanks, B.E Young Sr. Do I see you on some of the fishing boards?

B and S vs. Honda

Hey guys. Well, I was looking and about to buy the same B and S 1808 as the guy that started this topic, so I was glad/and not to have read this. I have read a few reviews on other sites and there seems to be a majority opinion (slight majority mind you)that the Honda motors are more plastic inside over the past year or two, and the quality is starting to go down as is the longevity. I too am starting out, and felt this was going to be a perfect washer until I read your feedback. SO, now I am confused because dang near everyone has more knowledge than me on this topic, so who do I beleive? My thinking is that for my needs starting out part time just doing decks, this 1808 will be more than enough. Thoughts?

Honda vs B&S

Tim, Read everything again. The overwealming opinion is go with Honda GX series. You cant Beat it!
A little story. About 8 years ago I was looking for a larger backup machine. I had a hot box and I needed a c/w pw to mate to it. At the same time A fellow contractor was buying a machine. He bougbt machine 10hp B&S with belt drive pump 3000/4.0. I bought a Honda 13hp GX with gear reduction 3000/4.0. He has had numerous problems, hard to start, replaced carb, burned oil after about 2 years. Seemed to wear out prematurely. Now he took good care of this machine, changed oil, keep it clean and stored properly. I on the other hand only changed the oil and spark plug. This thing still runs like a scalded ape. No problems. It has outlasted the B&S 2:1. Even though I like the belt drive better than the gear reduction. This made little difference. Spend the money, its a little more, you get what you pay for. It will last you much longer. Nothing is worse than trying to do a job with some kind of POS home owner machine. If you are going to be a contractor have some contractor grade equipment. ( Ill probably get flamed for that statement ). Anyway you will pay for this machine in no time.

There ya go Tim, those are MY thoughts.

Scalded Ape....

man I laughed my butt off on that comment. I think I found the motto for my new pressure washing business. "I will Clean Your Deck Like A Scalded Ape!" Now comes the decision on the work uniform....hhhmmm.

In all seriousness, I think you are right. My wife has a honda accord, and that dadgum thing will not die no matter what I do. Those fellas in Japan seem to know a thing or two about small motors so I will look into a honda. Now, what honda model is comparable to the B and S 1808?

Thanks again for all your help everyone. I consider this site to be a real assest.

I've got five machines, all with Honda engines, and have not had an engine failure. Two of my machines are going on ten years old this summer. Knock on wood....:)

One thing to look at is the size of the gas tank. The 1.7 gallon tank on the 11 & 13 hp Hondas will allow you to wash nonstop for at least three hours.

Smaller tanks equal less work time between fill ups, which also wastes time. Plus, it's not the safest thing in the world to refuel a hot engine.

I'm also feeling that a 10hp motor would be stretching it's legs quite a bit. I'd rather have a little more hp, and not have the engine work so hard.
