Need Advice on stripping

I am working on a bid for a residential customer.
They have a deck and some furniture that has a solid stain....not certain what it is but it has a pink tint to it. That called it opaque...the deck is standard pressure treated pine but the benches are Teak.
They want the stain gone and put everything back to natural...
I may still shy away from this one due to their expectations may be higher than my confidence on the final outcome (Have dealt with solids before...but usually with customers who are cool about it not being perfect)
I don't know if their picky people, but their landscaping is beautiful and some real fancy wood work around the house. Plus the Teak furniture.

Lots of flowers against the deck...so, any suggestions on strippers?

I carry a stripping kit with four different strippers,Wolman deckstrip, Wolman A&L(acrylic/latex)
Biowash stripex L and Superdeck wood stripper. If the finish does not come off with any of these I don't take the job!

Russell Cissel has a stripper that claims to be harmless to plants,I got a sample and I think it is just sodium percarbonate at very high levels, not sure though.

Well the last couple of posts before this one were edited out for some reason ...but!
Jon the only trouble I have removing CWF UV is when there are multiple coats, then you have to strip off each layer one at a time(with wolman at least)Usually it comes off like dead skin from a sunburn. But you will still have to clean all the drips and mistakes that were made after you get the top layer off.Once you start stripping you will be amazed at all the mistakes you will see.I once uncovered a set of footprints that went all the way across the deck, you couldn't see them until you take the layer on top that hides them. Also Jim Bilyeu said he has no problem getting most finishes off with one stripping so all this might be moot.

Smart idea carrying the different strippers with you.
All the foilage around this deck does worry me...At least if I am to do a good job...I could easily half do it and save the flowers

I didn't think Russell had anything to do with ECS. Russell's company is called Extreme Solutions.......or does he have two?

I have talked to him several times........doesnt seem like the kind of guy you described in your previous post......

We have been using Extreme Solutions products, along with some others, for several years now. When we started out, Russ was always there for us via phone, helping in any way he could. He has always been upfront about his product, The Stripper, and its limitations and will tell you if he thinks it will work or not for a particular job.

I want to be clear, Russ is NOT associated with ECS. You might want to double check you sample.

He has also added two other product to his line this year, and is working on still more. We used a smaple of one of the newer ones recently on a really tough job - stripping paint off a deck. His new product performed as well as any of the other more popular products.

My advice would be get to know Russ. Ask him questions, and you'll find him to be honest, and concerned about the result you get with his products. He's glad to send samples, and he welcomes feedback, which he shares with his chemist.

Good luck,
Beth

I live real close to Russ and he came to my last job site with a few of his products. They work under several conditions and he does tell you when they do and don't work. Great customer service to me! No one really makes a product that works "ideal" for CWF-UV. Even Flood, the makers of cwf, say their "pro-series" cleaner and stripper has a hard time with it. Went to one of their seminars a few weeks ago and got this info straight from the horses mouth. Russ' "Stripper" is a good product, but you have to use it within 60 minutes of mixing it and mixes best with warm water.

Hi Reed,
What do you think of his new product? Rod used it on a painted deck and it did really well. We're glad he's expanding the product line. You're right about the customer service. It's great!

Hi Beth,

Russ' "38" did strip some old failed TWP and cleaned the fence very nicely. You do have to be careful in the strength that you mix it. Found out on my fence and not a customers! Thank goodnes. Though I do like the Wolman's deck strip too!! It does what it says and when you apply the All exterior cleaner/brightner after the stripper, the cedar is beautiful, almost hate to put readyseal on it! I am using two of the readyseals, natural cedar and the light brown. Very happy with it and Russ is coming out to one of my job sites and see the readyseal put down and the results. Got him very interested in the product.
Off to strip a small one, finally. Doesn't anyone own decks on the ground and less than 500sf

Not sure why there is all this confusion. The bottom line on these strippers. Go to your local paint store and purchase any of the well known strippers. They are all about the same, some are a little stronger than others. There really is no need to buy this stuff out of state. You are wasting your money.

If you have a job that has a tough finish you can use a stripper that is made to strip paint. Semi transparent stains that have been in the sun for a year or more are the easiest to strip.

Everything you need you can get from Home Depot, Lowes,Local Paint Store or a chemical company. I am sure they have good customers service as well. I just hate to see people waste money on the same stuff you can get for half the money or less locally. It would be different if the chemicals you are talking about were different. But they are not. They only have a different name.

Hope this helps.

Hi Dan,
Confusion? I think we cleared that up when we determined that Russ is not associated with ECS.

The great thing about not buying from Home Depot, Lowes, and the like, is that if you buy from a contractor you can also get help and advice. To many, that is well worth the price of shipping.

Some of the things we get, we get at the above mentioned stores. Others, we have shipped to us, because we prefer the quality and the support. Companies such as Delco, Extreme Solutions, and ********** fall into that category for us.

I agree that keeping your cost to a minimum is paramount if you want to see an increase in your bottom line, but if you use a product for half the price that causes you to spend more time on the site and still produces a result that is not up to standards, well, then did you really get a good deal? Did the customer?

Just my .02 worth....

Beth :)

Beth,

I agree with you some what. It is nice to get the support. But you can get that on any bulletin board. I do not agree with you regarding the quality of the product or the price. I do not see the benefit in paying double for the same thing, give or take.

I also feel that contractors that have been in business for as little as a year can figure out how to use most equipment and products on their own. Especially with the information that is on the net.

That may not of been possible 5 years ago. But everyone has a way of doing things I guess. There really is nothing wrong with that. I feel that to make a informed decision, the more info the better.

Thanks for your take on this issue. I always value your informative comments. Just wish you came around more. Hope all is well. Have you been to get away from your other job to help Rod out full time?

Best of Luck this year.

Hi Dan,
Yeah, I know I have not been around much but there is a good reason for that! Last year we did three times what we did the year before, and this year we are still well above last year. A good problem to have. I'm still selling software, but suspect in a year or so I will be here full time. The commercial side of the business has taken off nicely, and supported us well all year. We just hired our summer wood crews and they are training now. Should be a good season.

Don't get me wrong, we wouldn't pay double for the same thing we could get locally, but Rod does have a couple of things he likes to use that have to be shipped in. For one, he uses the DSR-50 quite a bit. That has to be shipped. No one here that we know of carries it here. On the other hand, we can easily get Wolman and ABR products locally, and we do.

I know that there is alot more support that there was even 3 years ago. It's great to see it. But it's also nice to be able to pick a brain or two when you are new and things seem overwhelming. I have spoken to several newbies this year, and their issues still ring a familiar bell.

Hope you have a great year,
Beth

Dan Flynn is right.I told my local supplier of wolman deck strip that I was going to start ordering 5 gallon jugs of stripper for $59.99 and he dropped my price from $14.35 per gallon to $13.10...which for deckstrip 4 gallons is really 5 gallons(1.3 per jug) I can usually get 5 gallons of effective stripper out of one jug of deckstrip...so I am satisfied! and I can order it and have it at a moments notice.

Hi JR,
Question for you..... is the active ingredient or should I say formula the same in the Wolman stripper as it is in the DSR-50, or is the Wolman stripper more like the ABR X-180? Please let me know, and I'm gonna go get more coffee!

Thanks...
Beth

Deckstrip is sodium hydroxide.I have never used the two chemicals you mentioned,so I can't compare.

I gave up buying deck stripper, too expensive. I buy concrete cleaner (sodium hydroxide) in 5's from Zep and mix it between 3 and 5-1 with water. Works excellent. SWP mixed a stain wrong, was supposed to be natural toner, made it natural stain (mustard color). Had to strip it off 4 days later after sitting in the Texas sun
