hi

ran into this and solved it with some difficulty... here it is if you run into it...

have a robin/subaru 22hp v-twin running a general pump.

elect starter self destructed

bought a new starter... starter I had was not avail so bought the 'new style' replacement.

new style would not fit in hole in bit of tin air baffle, so did away with the bit of tin.

ran fine for rest of winter, but as spring moved in and ambient air temps went from 0-20F to 40-60F machine would start to cough and eventually die after 20-30 minutes of running. seemed like a fuel problem.... thought it a vapor lock issue

called tech support and local distibutor and was roundly pooh-poohed for thinking what i thought... was told to buy new ignition coils etc.

had saved the old piece (i never toss anything out, a practice which i get made fun of for) so ground out the hole large enough to fit the new starter thru and reinstalled it all... prob gone

Vapor lock. The tin helps keep the air in that area. The movement of the air keeps the engines and the fuel cool. I have had a couple of hondas that I had to reroute, because the fuel line was getting too close to the muffler, and that was the designated route. They suck at sucking fuel...
