Hey Erik...welcome to PWN. I don't do hoods so I can't help you on that front BUT...what type of pricing was the company that you were working for getting?

Check your local authorities about certs needed, but for the most part certifications aren't worth the $10K it costs to get them. That doesn't mean I wouldn't get one, but it wouldn't be first on my list unless of course they are needed in your area (which I doubt very seriously).

As far as pricing goes: that's a tough question because it is so different everywhere in the country. What you need to do is some market research from local restaurants and see what they are paying. That doesn't mean you can only charge that much but if every restaurant you ask says they are paying $125 every 6 months, I wouldn't waste my time. You are looking for some $400 prices here and there.

Another thing to consider is if you want people working for you or if you will be doing all the work yourself. You will be very limited to the jobs you can tackle if you do them yourself and there is always a safety factor of being out alone, at night with dangerous machines and chemicals. Howerver, the upside is the money is really good!

Insurance will cost you somewhere in the neighborhood of $3000/year for a small operation.

Fuel will be your biggest expense unless you have employees. If you know nothing about KEC then definitely get some training, it's not rocket science, but it can be very dangerous and expensive to mess up. If you are interested in training, I recommend Larry Hinkley from Delco. Good, honest guy that I would trust with my kids. His info is: larryh@1.com and phone is 800 211-0287 Tell him Ant from Hood Cleaning Helper sent you that way he can charge you double and send half to me :D Just kidding, I have no affiliation with him or Delco at all.

Hope this helps a little.

I feel the same way about Larry. Had dinner with him down in Myrtle Beach last year.

He announced that he is retiring....not sure when so I would call and ask for him ASAP.

Good info Ant...thanks bro

I worked for company called facilitec. We had all out back s, high end accounts . Carrabbas is a nice Italian place in Florida it was $ 300 per side of the hood and ducting and fan. I recently asked my Chinese restaurant I go to. She said $120 per side $ 240 total.

I have a northern tool by me and can purchase the diesel 354,000 btu heater/ Pressure washer to do the cleaning. I know how to job completely ,tarping, funneling the water into barrels to mop on the way out the door.

I had done this job a few yrs back, I actually loved it but my company did not pay me wright. My company used alkaline to clean and I had drop land on foot and have 6 inch chemical burn war wound.

I was just curious what Fast food pays in your area and your sit down restaurants etc.

What Chemicals Are using?

Anything to beware of the industry.

Lastly guys thank you for support and help

I cannot work for $24.00 per hour, and will not. We get more than your chinese friend is willing to pay just to do ALFs. The last chinese I did generated $710.00 in 5 hours. And Albert did not have someone sit in the corner and stare at me, I am allowed to have ice water when I want and even soda pop when I want. Be choosey and expensive.

This is why I totally enjoy being in business for myself for the last 10 years. Unless the chips are totally down I do not envision dusting off my resume to work for someone else. I just don't see it...BUT again if I had to I would for my family.

This is a good thread!
