Ok y'all, I need some feedback on the "pitchwitch" and what to use for sealing a cedar roof which is near a lake and in the woods.

Thanx:p

Hey Debi,
For starters I don't think that the pitch witch would work on a cedar roof. Way to many grooves to get in to. I just got done with a 6000 sq ft roof that we took so much moss and dirt off. The roof turned out great but the moss is a time killer. We use a product called Cheveron shingle oil to seal with it is a straw color but it comes out looking more like medium brown than straw.

Jim,

What kind of safety equipment do you use/wear when doing a job like that? and how did you apply it?

Take a look at the roof in a couple weeks, I bet it will look alot more like a straw color..........its pretty usual for a sealer/stain to be darker at first.

Mike,
So far we've been really lucky. There has always been a few shingles to replace, so I pick a couple of the worst ones right under the ridge cap and remove the old shingle then I have some hoops that bolt into the roof with 4-2½ lag bolts. From there it's the good ole ropes and harness. So far this system has worked well. The job I just finished my helper put it thru the ultimate test, he slipped at the peak on wet wood and hit at the bottom of the roof line at mach 1. Everything held up great except his legs, they were so shakey after that we took a super long lunch to calm the nerves. I also have better luck with very soft flat soled shoes, they seem to stick better than the standard work boot. I'd like to get a pair of rock climbing shoes to try out. If the roof is steeper than a 6/12 it's time for boom truck.
As far as the roof color goes it is different with the age of the shingles. The older the shingle the more brown it turns.

Hey Jim,

If you do allot of cedar shake roofs, invest in a pair of corkies. Best money you'll ever spend. You'll never slip and slide on another cedar shake roof. They're on the spendy side, but well worth the money, tax deductable too ( safty gear ) ....

Debi,
I have a customer in Minnesota using the Pitch Witch on Cedar shake roofs, give me a call and I will have him contact you with feedback.

Glenn,
Is that company in or around the twin cities? If so, I'd like to see it in action on cedar shingles. I can see it working on asphalt but not on cedar, at least none of the ones that I've done. If it impresses me in action I'd buy one too. Walking the roofs is really hard on the legs and ankles.
