For many years I have used cuprinol sherwin williams Uv sunblock cedar. It came pre-tinted and was my most popular color. Now that they have changed to deckscapes SW does not have the old tint formula. My store has experimented in trying to match it but they gave up after 3 tries. Other stores in the area don't have the formula either. I have e-mailed Sherwin Willams and have gotten no responce yet. ANYONE in this same dilema? or BETTER YET anyone have the tint formula??

cabbott is a mineral spirit cleanup product. I prefer the water based products for their ease of cleanup. Cabbott has a water based sealer that I have used that contains silicone and teflon. Although there is no argument that Cabbott products are good , my c ustomers are satisfied with a 3 year cycle of repeat cleaning with the UV sunblock product. Water cleanup alows me to price for a value that customers can deal with every 3 or 4 years . I am open to new products as always. Sell me on the Cabbots!!!

Ranked #1 by consumers product for 4th year in a row. Rich looking texture if applied by brush/roller. Will last longer than 3 years if applied properly. (Great selling point). Dont have to worry about them changing colors as they have maintained the same color choices for years..... Cabot gives you free 2oz containers of all colors if you request. Cabot provides great customer support and will supply you with as many color charts as your heart desires... Hope this helps

We also use Olympic Oil based sealers and have had great success with them also. Last year they ranked 3rd in consumers products. Gives your customers a choice on price. Also they have great customer support, they will supply you with as many color charts that you want and offer numerous (16) colors to choose from on semi-transparent...

Consumer reports if thats what you relating too only reviews products from companies that want to pay for the review. Most now adays do not do it anymore or are not called to have thier products reviewd.

I like Olymipc and SuperDeck but I allways have trouble with Cabots. Most time's it is a customer or (AKA) painter that I have to come in and fix the problem. Over Applied and hard as hell to get out of soft wood without sanding. Similar to PentOcrap seems to have a resin that fights strippers.

Oil is fast to remove with current strippers/cleaners H20 based sealeres bite more and are slow to be affected by stripper/cleaners. I stay with Oil! No wax and easy to maintain.

Onecall has it right I just don't go with the reviews they are not a full court and are not representable to all products available.

Assuming your going water based...

I was told by my local S/W store that the new "Tinted" Cedar Oil was the same as the old Oil based Cedar. In fact S/W HQ sent in labels to put over old inventory.

I really like S/W's Oil products. Easy to put on and it wears well.

However, many people on this site are fans of Ready Seal - I would try it if it were readily (no pun intented!) available and I had more volume.

I use the water bourne products because I find in my area the oil holds the dirt and pollen and bakes it into the floor. . Yes, oil formulas look better upon first application. Just my experience, bash me all you want It works for me and my customers. I have seen some action by the rep at my SW store and they have located some of the old Uv sunblock cedar for me until they can get the pre packaged cedar in the water based formulas. Gotta' love service!

I prefer to offer contractor grade stains that are not available in local stores. It instills a sense with the customer that I am providing a higher quality product than the retail stores carry. This allows me to price a little higher, and justify it.

Ready Seal for one, and Wood Tux for another.

TWP is another stain typically not found in many retail stores, usually it's found in commercial paint supply stores.

TWP KelleyMoore Paints in my area. Very Similar to SuperDeck in that they are both quality oil based. They want 35 a gallon for TWP vs 21 for Superdeck and on decks lasts the same no big differance.

Old Sunblock Formula

Jeffex1,

I have used quite a bit of the sunblock factory mixed colors as well, and would rather keep on than stripping it off and using something else. My SW store in Springfield, MO has a conversion formula that is pretty close to the old stuff. Let me know if you are still interested.
Jason,

I used the UV sunblock cedar the most. I tried the new deckscape toner that they said was the same thing but it looks more watered down. I tried it on my own deck and it faded fast. I will be trying the deckscape waterbased semi-trans stain that costs more in 2005. I would appreciate the formula you use. I bought 20 gals of the old stuff at the end of the season but it won't last long.
