Fence sealing

A fence company wants me to start sealing the new fences they are installing. The fence company will be selling the work for me all I have to do is show up and do the work. What is a good price for this, I think this will turn into alot of work. I have a pretty good idea of how much I want to charge but want to stay around the standard.Should I charge for each side or include both sides in the price. I'll be spraying with a shurflo or a graco line lazer. They are also requesting thompsons water seal, name recognition easier sell.

Most of the pw's on this board will tell you, don't use the T's stuff. There are plenty of sealers out there on the market that are much much better. As far as pricing, I learned the hard way on the shadow box types. Very labor intensive and will never do a "cheap" one again. My price for shadow box types that are 6x8 has risen to around 40 bucks per section. The straight pickets 6x8 are at 25 per section. Your pricing should include "your" type of detailing and how much time you are going to spend on it. You can make money on fences, but you can destroy fences if using to much pressure. Good luck with the fencing, but find another sealer. State to your fencing company that you are using a contractors grade sealer not an over the counter sealer. Shop around, check out other products, you will only improve your marketability by using a high grade sealer.

I'm not going to be washing the fences, just sealing. I dont normally use thompsons the fence company wants me to use it for name recognition, easier to sell. Its not going to be alot of detail just spraying. Greg/sd

If you use an inferior product you will get a bad
reputation, no matter what you charge.
I know nothing about the product that Steven is advertising, and I
am not implying that it is either good or bad, but I am very familiar
with the product you mentioned.

For name brand recognition and a "Superior Product"
I suggest Wolmans F&P.

Wolmans F&P

There are other good products available ,
Wolmans is one of several top quality sealers, and my favorite,
I suggest you do a little research first.

Remember: "It is easier to explain price once, than to apologize
for poor quality forever"!

I know this might sound ridiculous but... I recently was working on this house wash and deck and I commented about the fence. It looked brand new and was stained with a cedar toned product(Not what I am used too though, too yellowee)When I inquired about it, the customer had said the fence was a year old last spring (april 2000)He had done it himself and used the new thompsons! It looked very good.I know that Thompsons is crap but maybe they straightened up their act! I don't know ...just an observation. Like the old commercial goes...I'm not gonna try it ,you try it!

I use CWF UV CEDAR on fences, spraying it with an airless, the fence really comes off looking good. You can buy it for about $68/5 gal. I find it holds up real well on fences.

Would never put it on a deck.

hey deck works,

are you using the cwfuv cedartone on pressure treated and cedar fences, or just one of them?? does it look good on both?? Is it resisting mildew (turning black) better than on decks?? How long does it seem to be looking good?? thanks for your responses, hope work is going well for you. How did your follow-ups on estimates turn out?? take care

Jon,
I've got fences I did 3yrs ago that still look great. I have done only cedar fences no pressure treated. It looks real good. I use Sherwin Williams Cuprinol oil based on decks, their CEDAR matches CWF real close. Its purely a product cost decison and I think it holds up on Vertical real well.

I actually haven't followed up on any of my outstanding estimates. Right now I have way more work than I can handle, which is a good thing.

Take care,

When we've got someone looking to save money or just wants the bare basics we use Olympic's WaterGaurd $39 for 6 gal at Lowe's.
Still a recognizable name and I have seen deck's we did over a year ago that still look like we just did them in Max or something. And my privacy fence at home is 2 years old with just the WaterGaurd and has still not even tried to grey out on me.
I've been impressed....of course I still use their higher grades with a majority of our customers.

Anyone have an update on the Class Action Suits against Behr?

I prefer Olympic CWP - $45 at menards for 6gal. I find for a clear sealer this works the best and is cheap. Spray out of a pump sprayer.

I think what many are missing, is that pure clear coatings, like T..Water Seal, and any water seal for that fact, have no UV protection, and will not stop the wood from turning grey. I would insist with the fence builder that a better quality product must be used. After all, if you want the people to call you back, and refer you, a better product needs to be used. On the other hand, if you just want to make fast bucks, get in, get out, the T product would allow that. I sure couldn't recommend that, however.

Don't forget that new fencing also has mill glaze on it, and really should be washed first, for best results.

I generally get 2- 2.50 per foot, per side for washing and staining. If the job is under 100 feet, I charge 2.75 - $3 per foot

Steven,

I am under the impression that for any clear, or "natural" wood stain/sealers, that there must be some pigment, or color platelets that provide the actual UV protection. The Thomsons, WaterGuard, and most of the other $5-6 /gal stuff does not add any color or pigmentation whatsoever, and therefor, greys out and looks like crap within a year. If your product is indeed clear, prevents greying and UV damage, lasts at least two years, and is easily strippable, I would be highly interested. Please let me know.

Pigmented Sealer? Are you just talking about the actual color of the stain? That is, cedar color stain? The fences in my area are made with cheap white wood, not cedar. They come with the houses. Everyone stains their fence with a color. Does this colorized stain prevent the greying out and block the UV? Not sure what brand to get....and after reading this post I am totally confused now. Maybe hit the Home Depot for suggestions.

Also, I am going to stain some fences in my area. Is a pump up sprayer going to work? Seems like among other things that this would take a very long time AND look very unprofessional. Seems like a $200 - $300 airless left in a trailer with a 50 - 100 ft hose would look the best. Tho, I am just speaking from observation not actual use.

Thanks for the posts.
