Well here we go again its Pw time up here in the Northeast and the money should come rolling in that is if the stock market didn't cripple to many customers.
Of course here I go again with the hiring of employees thoughts. My body keeps telling me to get some more workers to go along with me and my other employee so I think I will put in add in a couple of weeks to see what kind of worker I can higher.
With the big FOUR O comming up on me in a couple of months if I don't higher some workers to lightened my work load by the end of the season I'm going to feel like I turned 70 instead. Does anyone else share these hiring thoughts I get every year? -John-

Have you considered temps? We have companies here that temp out light industrial workers. You give them a call, let them know you need someone to do washing and presto! they are standing there at your door.

They have already been screened, they are already covered by insurance, all the taxes and such are taken care of. Our local temp office has guys who are already experenced in washing. If within 2 hours this person isn't working out, call the office and presto...he/she is gone with another one on the way to replace them.

The rate is equal to what we would have paid someone ourselves.

Just an idea.

We tried that about 4 years ago. It didn’t work well for us. Yes if someone doesn’t work out you can send him or her on his or her way however the job you had scheduled needs to be done now. We went through 4 companies who told us they screened their folks (very big screen if you ask me) we went through (on average) 2 people dumped for each one needed per job. Then you take into consideration training these folks each time wear on equipment and quality of work when these people really don't care because they will be gone in a day. My managers hated it big time.
Not to mention showing a complete stranger the inside of your office, trucks etc. (we did have equipment walk away but could prove nothing)

We went back to full time well-paid folks, but finding them is NOT easy.

But as for the above, hey everyone has horror stories I guess.

In December, I hired two guys thru a temp agency......one was great, the other so-so. Had to let them go during the winter. I hope to have the good guy back very soon. He didn't return my phone call from last week yet, so I'm not taking that as a good sign, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Hey Mike:

Just a tip from one who was a Supplemental (emphasis on mental) Staffer for ten years.

If you used a temp from the agency, typically there is a disclaimer in their invoice about hiring the person outright and this usually includes a fee (10-20% of first years annual salary).

Also, if the person who worked for you is transient, his old phone may not work, but the agency may have his current #. Trust me, many temps are transient.

Hope this helps.

Mark,

Thanks for the post. I am going to hire him back thru the temp agency again, to satisfy their requirements. This guy's not a transient, I'm pretty sure. He's only 19 and lives with his parents, but is a great worker.

Thanks again

I put an ad in my local paper two weeks ago. I needed two fulltime employees to maintain all my car lot accountants.I just got through sorting 50 applications last week. I rec'd 120 phone calls. I just hired two people that I think will be able to do the job. I called references, I interviewed 10 people, I examined past work history. Selecting the right employees was difficult.
I have found in the past that I genrally don't like to have employees but my business warrants it.
All I have to say to anybody that needs to hire employees, GOOD LUCK!

Hey Walt
We know what you mean, Good Help is Hard to Find!!!
we have hired people before starting-ot at $8-10.00 hr.
we have had some that who said they would love to work for us, needed a job bad, but only long enough to realize they had to work, seems like no-body wants to work when you need them, then they leave you in a bind.

Hired 2 new people last month for a large contract we are in the middle of. One is working out great...and he is the one I chased down.

The other...the one who said they really needed a job..they really would love to work for me..they really wanted the experience....well...in 2 weeks they have been late 5 times (twice over 90 minutes late) and 2 no-show days.....

Go Figure!
