Keeping Your Phone Number

Hey everyone,

I was talking with a friend of mine who manages a large cell-phone company in the Hampton Roads, Va area and he informed me that beginning in November your cell phone number will become yours and you can take it with you to a new company. A law was passed recently to my understanding that makes this effective in November, so this should be great for anyone out there who does'nt like their provider but does'nt want to change their number.

Was that law passed in Virginia or is it a federal law? It would be nice if I had a choice in services while keeping my number. I wouldn't have to worry about losing a possible customer.

I'll have to talk to my cell phone guy and find out, but I'm pretty sure it was a federal issue and will be nation wide.I'll find out for sure and let you know.

My understanding about that is the cell phone companies are refusing to carry over your number if you change companies AND are working on a getting that law revoked.

Such a shame since it cost them nothing if you want to change companies but they loose out when someone says if I cannot keep my number I will not change.

Also they won't let you use the same phone, you must buy new phones from the new company, they claim each company has the phones are on different levels of air waves.

Call around and ask the cell phone companies if they allow you to keep the number you have from their competitor and if they say yes ask for it in writting, they won't do it.
