I took a job and I dont know what I should do. The job was to go to this company and wash their sign infront of the building and wash their forklift. The sign was very old and they wanted to repaint. I did a test spot and everything looked ok. I started at the top right side moving to the left bottom well guess what the left bottom was rotten and a letter blew off. I then went on to wash the fork lift and did. The fork lift turned out great.

Here is the question would you charge for the sign yes or no or any advice. Help

Personally I wouldn't. I realize you can't make money this way but the sign is of no use to them as they need to replace it. I would explain what happened and advise them you are not charging them as they should replace the sign. I feel in the long run this will be the best move as you will probably do more washing for them in the future.

Glenn took the words right out of my mouth. In the spirit of customer retention, I believe you should not charge for the sign. You never know.........the guys brother could own twenty convience stores or something..........

Do whatever you feel is right.

<b><font color=green>I would charge for the sign b/c of the "every old and rotten",they are going to have to repaint anyway and they would have had to replace the rotten part also,I see nothing wrong that you did,so why give your work away.Look at it this way they knew it was in bad shape before you washed it and had plans on repainting plus maintenance which means replacing a broad or two.

Let me go alittle deeper into the story I work for these guys full time. They are a bunch of rich snotty guys who claim they never have any money. I did do the fork lift for them. In three years this is the first time they have ever asked me to do anything. I would not have done the sign had the VP's mom not come into town and tell him how aweful the sign looked and she was going to paint it. The fork lift I did as an add on to make the trip worth while. The sign was about a 3ft by 3ft you know 10min worth of work so now what do ya think.

<b><font color=green>Seems have you where they want you.
Its your bussiness not theirs, how do you think they would have handled it if it was their bussiness not yours.

If they didn't have a forklift would you still do it free,,,,you have mouths to feed,do you recken they would bring food and put it on your table if you where sick for a month or so,Or buy the kids diapers.

On something small like that and washing something else like the forklift you and add the price of the small job to the other job and tell the small job is free if you want......I understand tho.</b></f>

I don't see what the problem is here, like Mike and Glenn said, just tell them how rotten it is, the sign not the cheap guys and you are not going to charge for it.

Then if you did not quote a price for the fork life just ad a few bucks to it, like the $10 some say to discount.

Now you say you work for them, as an employee or independent pressure washer?

If as an employee I would never have done the job, or at the least told them it would be totally free and you would not be responsible for any damage.

That is how I would handle it but others might disagree.

Jon I work for these guys full time as a Machinist. I have worked their for Twelve years because of the health insurance. I am a Supervisor their and have been for the past 6 years. If it were not for the health insurance on my oldest daughter I would have told them to take a hike years ago.

The pressure washing business is all mine. I do not have a partner or anything. My wife even stays out of the business. I would like for her to get involved in it but she has no interst in it what so ever.

Ah that is right, sorry I forgot about your daughter and the need for that insurance.

Looks like they will need to learn how to seperate business from employment.

I would see your position as the same as doing work for a relative, just don't do it or do it for free.

Sometimes it is best to give it away rather then end up having them say YOU damaged it so pay for to fix it knowing it cannot be fixed.
